Reimagining the Automobile Industry by Selling the Electricity – New York Times

Here’s something fist-worthy: some high-powered smartass with a suit wants to turn the auto industry into the cell phone industry. He wants to promote electric vehicles and then sell us the “electric fuel”.

Okay, so how many people here like the cell phone industry ? “Get a free (three-dollar) phone if you sign your life away for 3 years!” Or if you like flashy phones, it sounds more like “Give us $600 for the shiny (eight-dollar) phone, and sign your life away for 3 years!”

The biggest problem with cars is not the fuel, it’s that they’re overpriced and poorly built/designed. Having Ford take a cut of my hydro bill isn’t going to make the car any more reliable, it’s just going to make my hydro bill bigger, in addition to the ridiculous maintenance and repair costs associated with any vehicle. Even better, the “electric fuel” will be of the minimum quality tolerable and probably cause frequent problems with the on-board electronics, because that’s more profitable!

It’s like electronics, they used to make them super-good, built to last decades, and realized that wasn’t profitable so now everything is made to break after a few years (often less). This ex-SAP hotshot has his head so far up his ass, maybe he should offer free toilets when you subscribe to 3 years of cheap sand-encrusted paper rolls.
