Retro PC gaming

Hey it’s Sunday. Sundays suck! Anyone who knows me, knows at least three things about me:

  1. I’m a big geek
  2. I bash everyone and everything
  3. My PC is big and fast, and I use every last bit of its power

Well the geek in me decided to kill time on this boring Sunday by putting together a retro PC, just for fun, so I could relive the great games of the DOS era.

Blizzard's golden child returns: Starcraft 2 officially announced

For those of you who are too young to remember Starcraft, GET OFF MY INTERTUBES! Er, actually you can read up about the bestselling 1998 game, maybe google it real quick. Starcraft is huge, even 9 years after its release it is still played by millions of people worldwide.

Flickr (aka Yahoo) needs a reality check

You may have heard of an Icelandic photographer named Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir (I have no idea how to pronounce that!). She’s taken some gorgeous artistic shots and trick photos that dazzle the eye and mind alike. She’s so good, in fact, that an unscrupulous print shop decided to sell canvas prints of her work without permission, and made a fair chunk of money

BitTorrent done well

I’m always bitching about bad programmers and how they should be murdered and raped (in that specific order), but I can certainly acknowledge talent when I see it. Today’s example of excellent software is the awesome µTorrent, possibly the best BitTorrent client for Windows.

Age vs Learning vs Stubbornness

Sometimes I wonder if I’m getting “old”. What is “old” anyway ? When does one cease to be young and cross over into this fuzzy concept known as old age ?
Allow me to give an example: Ruby. It’s the big fad on the net, a high-level programming language.

What's in an Operating System ?

As a long-time hacker (the good kind), I’ve dealt with a staggering assortment of operating systems over the years, on many different platforms. In the last few years, I’ve been growing ever more irritated by the blurring distinction between operating systems and applications, and the nasty problems that commingling has created.

I'm going to suck you dead! Study links oral sex and throat cancer

It’s nice to live in a world where people still swallow “scientific studies” as the one and only truth (unless some holy text says otherwise). Just out is a study linking oral sex and throat cancer

Brain-damaged teen (seriously), drunk and high, runs into oncoming traffic

Every once in a while, we get a chilling reminder of how amazingly dumb people can be. In the news today, a troubled teenager died a nasty death after jumping out of a moving car and running across a busy highway.

Domain names, and how they suck

There’s this wonderful racket on the net, that makes tons of money for nothing. It’s heavily marketed, littered with up-sells of all kinds, and priced arbitrarily. It’s easy to join in as a business partner, and hard to do well.
That racket is called the domain name business. Everyone who wants to be seen on the web has to get at least one domain

The open-source world as I see it

Hi kids! Did you miss me ?
I experienced a few hours of downtime last night, as a result of some minor tweaking on my server. Actually I just added a 2nd IP address, simple right ? Well how is it that a friggin’ wizard like me, can crash a server with something trivial like adding an IP address ? Red Hat Linux, that’s how.
